Just caught The Adventures of Tintin by Steven Spielberg… this is my favourite film of the year. I have never had so much fun at the theatres in a long time. I am very very partial to Tintin… it was one of the few European things that I enjoyed as a child so Spielberg’s film is a total nostalgia trip that is (fortunately) also a deserving addition to Herge’s legacy. Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish’s screenplay remains truthful to The Secret of the Unicorn while also managing to integrate different source material from the Tintin mythology to come up with new and amusing twists.
I just want to say that this film is as much about Herge’s comics as it is Spielberg. The director does not hold any punches back in terms of action, comedy and adventure. He shows again why he’s an amazing visual storyteller who stretches the limits of cinema to create new and exciting images. There is a scene that imitates the classic ‘swinging pirate ship’ ride that is visually stunning and a wonderful fight sequence. Spielberg is on a war path and he’s not pulling any punches. He is a tour de force that just keeps on giving. Honestly I usually cringe at the thought of revitalizing old franchises from my childhood but this Tintin film exceeds beyond all my expectations.
